The Association of Indian Authomobile Manufacturers (AIAM) has allayed fears that the introduction of unleaded petrol will lead to higher benzene emissions and thereby would add to air pollution. According to K Kumar, chairman, technical committee, AIAM, and director (engineering) Maruti Udyog Ltd, the tests carried to assess this aspect have confirmed that not only the benzene content would not increase, but, on the other hand, the emissions would be reduced significantly if a vehicle using unleaded petrol is fitted with a catalytic converter too.
