Notwithstanding the fact that India is among few countries of the world being self-reliant in developing indigenous fast-breeder and uranium based reactors in the world for the generation of nuclear power, the Department of Autonomic Energy is in the process of negotiation with some foreign countries to import a reactor from abroad which would generate 40,000 mw of electricity.
Revealing this, RK Sinha, chairman, Atomic Energy Commission here on Thursday said that the need for imported nuclear reactor has been felt as the indigenously built reactors are not able make complete use of imported Uranium. As the country has to import Uranium for its nuclear power generation from abroad, the indigenously built nuclear reactors because of its design can use only 70-80 per cent of the imported uranium for the generation of nuclear energy.
"This is why we have decided to go for imported reactors to generate 40,000 mw of additional nuclear energy," Sinha said, while talking to media persons at the Raja Rammana Centre for Advance Technology where he had come to attend the annual convocation ceremony of the BARC Training School. In this regard, he said talks are underway with few countries including France, Russia and America.
While agreeing to the fact that the contribution of nuclear power is merely 2.5 per cent to the total energy generation in the country, the AEC chairman said that in the next couple of years, over 4000 mw of nuclear power would be added to the existing capacity with the commissioning of seven years including four pressurized heavy water reactors which are under various stages of constructions in the country.
Replying to a question, Sinha said presently all the nuclear reactors developed in the country are uranium based and efforts are underway to develop Thorium-based nuclear reactors. Work on construction of these reactors would likely to start by the end of 12th Five Year Plan, he said.
Refuting ill-effect of radiation from nuclear reactors, Sinha described radiation effect on human body as misplaced apprehension. A thorough study by the Department of Atomic Energy on all those areas where nuclear power plants have been set up has categorically shown that radiation was not cause of cancer and other such disease in those areas as radiation level of all these nuclear reactors are well within the permissible level.
