Awards galore for ONGC to combat climate change

ONGC's good work in combating climate change has won it an international recognition. An eminent jury, under the chairmanship of Justice PN Bhagwati, former Chief Justice of India and Member of UN Human Rights Commission, adjudged ONGC the winner of '2008 Golden Peacock' award for an impeccable record in the climate change mitigation. Apart from this corporate recognition, ONGC's Institute of Drilling Technology secured the Golden Peacock award under ECO-Innovation category in Oil and Gas sector, while corporate Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) section of ONGC bagged the award under the environment management category. AK Hazarika, Director (Onshore),ONGC, who is also Director Incharge of Environment Management, received these awards from Prem Kumar Dhumal, chief minister of Himachal Pradesh, during the Global Convention on climate change at Palampur. Speaking on the occasion, Hazarika said, "ONGC has taken the ongoing climate change and global warming very seriously. Climate change entails risks, costs as well as opportunities. We feel that sustainable development is the solution and sustainable developments solutions can be evolved into a business model of a company, thereby creating value for the company and also contribute effectively to Climate change mitigation." Golden Peacock is an international recognition of the good work performed by organisations in socially relevant sectors. ONGC is the first central PSU to have a 'Comprehensive corporate policy on climate change and sustainability' and endeavours to develop all projects along that line. It is also the first PSU to have a full-fledged 'Carbon Management Group' and is adopting Carbon Management as the tool for sustainable development. The Group is developing CDM Projects under the Kyoto protocol.
