Shillong: With climate changes being felt in the 'Scotland of the East' and the world in general, the urgency to sensitise people, particularly the students, about global warming and adopt measures to address climate change was emphasised by many conscientious citizens.
A step towards this goal was the screening of a documentary -- An Inconvenient Truth -- which was initiated by former US Vice-President and Nobel Peace Prize winner Al Gore, which speaks about the threats of global warming to mankind and the earth, at the Soso Tham Auditorium here.
Altogether, twelve schools in Shillong with nearly 500 students watched the documentary on the first day. More schools are expected to turn up for Tuesday's screening, according to the organisers.
The programme was organised by Society for Promotion of Indigenous Knowledge and Practices (SPIKAP) in collaboration with Meghalaya Land Owners and Forest Association and other NGOs.
The documentary contains clips of AL Gore, a staunch campaigner against global warming, talking about the emergency of the situation and what "we, the people who are responsible for heating up the earth's atmosphere, need to do to control global warming."
Later, speaking to reporters, the chairman SPIKAP John F Kharshiing said the move was to help make the students aware of the devastating effect of global warming and climate changes.
The documentary was screened in Jaintia Hills earlier for students of eleven schools. Similar shows will be held other parts of the State, particularly in West Khasi Hills where deforestation has been rampant with people engaging in large scale felling of trees for burning charcoal and other purpose.
