THE death of a nine-month-old baby girl created a flutter in Tirunelveli on Tuesday after the parents of the baby claimed that the death was due to administration of Hepatitis B vaccination. A joint enquiry was conducted by the Health Department officials and Tirunelveli Corporation. While officials claimed to have evidence confirming that the baby was administered vaccine on April 9, the parents alleged it was on April 28. Even after the doctor there referred the case to Tirunelveli Medical College Hospital (TVMCH), the parents of the baby _ Ganesan and Muthumari of Kailasapuram took the baby to another private hospital in Tirunelveli town on the same day. Only after the doctor of that hospital advised the parents to admit the baby to TVMCH, the baby was taken there. The baby died on the way to the hospital at 7 p.m. on Monday. The sources confirmed that the baby had died due to febrile fits which was caused due to high fever. However, the parents claimed that the death was caused only after the baby was administered Hepatitis B vaccine on April 28 by a nurse of the Corporation hospital at Meenakshipuram. 'My daughter suffered from high fever only after she was administered the vaccine', alleged Muthumari. The report is expected to be forwarded to the Department of Health Services.
