Badal presents deficit budget

Promising massive infrastructure building, Tripura Finance Minister Badal Chowdhury presented a budget of Rs 5,248.76 crore with a deficit of Rs 76.74 crore for the 2008-2009 financial year in the Assembly here today. The budget has proposed substantial increase in capital expenditure as the outlay for infrastructure building has been pegged at Rs 1,763 crore. Presenting the budget, the Finance Minister made it clear that agriculture and infrastructure building have been given priority in the proposed budget. "The State Government will take proper steps to increase the agriculture productivity so that plan for achieving self-reliance in food grain production could be achieved by 2010', he said. Chowdhury said a total of 5,000 ha cultivable land will be brought under assured irrigation apart from development of marketing facilities for farmers.
