Bamboo plantation to protect Majuli from erosion

The Mission Bamboo for Application, in association with the Jorhat district administration, in Assam, has taken up a massive project to protect the world's largest river island, Majuli from flood and erosion. For this, Rs 29 lakh has already been allotted for the project. Stating this, Jorhat Deputy Commissioner Dr Rabi Kota said that in the first phase, the project will cover a total of 2.5 km stretch from Sumaimari ghat. For this purpose, already five villages have been selected and a joint forest committee has been formed. According to the project, various species of bamboo will be planted on the banks of the river Brahmaputra.
