Come 2004, and massive flowering of bamboo, if not timely utilised, will bring back spectres of famine to the northeast. Scientists at Rain Forest Research Institute (RFRI), Jorhat, have already started working on various aspects of bamboo flowering to check the phenomenon. Bamboo flowering leads to rapid increase in rat population and when bamboo seeds are exhausted, the rats head for granaries and standing crop, triggering a food crisis.
