Bamboo plantations and medicinal plants top the forest department's priorities to meet the near-impossible target of national tree cover of 33 per cent by 2012. Following recommendations of various research institutes, the centre has asked all state and Central departments, involved in tree plantations, to earmark at least 10 per cent of the area under the National Afforestation Programme for medicinal plants and bamboo plantation.
