Bangladesh Environmental Lawyers Association (Bela) yesterday formed a human chain in front of the Chittagong Press Club opposing the beaching of a toxic ship at a Chittagong ship-breaking yard.
Speakers at the human chain urged the authorities concerned not to allow the beaching of MT Enterprise blacklisted by Greenpeace for scrapping in Bangladesh.
They also demanded a ban on the import of all the 50 vessels blacklisted by the international environmental organisation Greenpeace for containing hazardous substances.
The speakers also called for restriction on child labour in this sector and full implementation of Basel convention to ensure the rights of workers involved in ship-breaking.
Human rights activists Jesmim Sultana Paru, Prof Md Mohiuddin, and Advocate Mahfuzul Islam Chowdhury spoke at the rally where Bela Coordinator Advocate Anwarul Islam Chowdhury delivered the vote of thanks.
Mentionable, the shipping ministry recently gave a nod to a ship-breaker for scrapping MT Enterprise ignoring its blacklisting by Greenpeace and public health concerns.
However, following a writ petition by Bela, the Supreme Court issued a rule nishi on the authorities concerned in this regard on September 17.
