The ban on the illegal trafficking of hazardous waste from developed to developing countries, adopted by more than 100 countries worldwide, has been defied by a few powerful parties who are out to make "easy and dirty money". Bakary Kante, president of the Third Meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Basel Convention, said yesterday that the ban on illegal transboundary trafficking had proven difficult to enforce.
