Corruption and the lack of strict government action against defaulters have resulted in the illegal felling of trees, haphazard construction activity and indiscriminate quarrying in the area. The hills are gradually losing their green cover, leading to a major ecological imbalance. Haphazard construction has also reduced the green cover to some extent, particularly along the Kalka-Shimla National Highway. The situation is particularly bad near Barog where builders are turning the hills into a concrete jungle.
