In blatant disregard for wildlife and in violation of the Forest Conservation Act, the Central Public Works Department (CPWD) is building several facilities in Mahavir Jayanti Park, a part of the Delhi Ridge it is supposed to protect. Any construction in the Ridge, a notified reserve forest, is permitted only after obtaining prior permission from the Ridge Management Board. In this case, however, no such permission has been sought or given. The CPWD has completed building a huge toilet complex, a parking lot, several bridges and rain shelters. The continuous whirring of cement mixers and the huge stockpile of construction material at the site suggest that a lot more construction has been planned.
