After a year of repeated announcement that it's almost done, on 14 April, the International Human Genome Sequencing Consortium (IHGSC) declared the successful completion of the Human Genome Project. The announcement came two-and-a-half years ahead of schedule and for a cost substantially les than the original estimates. Though an earlier draft of the genome sequence was revealed in June 2000, this update sequences the 3 billion DNA letters in the human genome with 99.99% accuracy and with fewer than 400 gaps in structure.
