Beijing auto emissions tests continue

Operators of more than 300,000 vehicles in Beijing must obtain passes from the local environmental protection agency before mid-April to continue operating in Beijing. The deadline had been set for April 1, but was postponed because the local environmental protection bureau could not organize enough personnel to conduct tail-gas emissions in time to meet the April 1 deadline. Getting special attention in the tests are the Beijing Jeep 212 and 2020 series, minivans, and cargo-carrying trucks of less than two tons in total weight. These types of vehicles may have to operate under strict restrictions because their exhausts exceed local limits on tail-gas emissions, according to local environmental officials.
