The state government had launched Ladli Laxmi Yojana with a view to creating positive thinking about girls among the masses, improvement in gender ratio and improving standard education of health of girls apart from laying a solid foundation for their future. The novel scheme has yielded very good results within a short span of one year. The popularity of Ladli Laxmi Yojana even among the people living in remotest parts of the state can be gauged by the fact that a target of benefiting 30 thousand girls was set for the year 2007 against which 40 thousand 854 girls have been benefited. This achievement amounts to 136 percent against the target. It may be mentioned that Mandla district has topped in target achievement under the scheme with 422.10 percent success followed by Betul (399.57 percent) and Chhindwara (350.92 percent). Seven districts have achieved more 200 hundred success and 19 districts have achieved 100 or more percent success in implementing the scheme. The scheme has created considerable awareness in the rural areas of the state. As many as 18 thousand 223 girls have been given benefit of the scheme during the short span of the current financial year while the target of the scheme till May was only eight thousand 332 girls. Thus 218.83 percent success has been achieved against the target. Changes in the mentality of people are palpable after implementation of this ambition scheme. The desire of a male heir by families is being abandoned and couples are adopting family planning even after two daughters. Such precedents have also been set when a couple underwent family planning operation after the mother gave birth to twin girls. Constant contact with Anganwadis by parents is also a sign of great popularity of the scheme. Keeping the popularity of Ladli Laxmi Yojana, the state government has decided to give its benefit first girl also from the year 2008 but the condition of family planning after second delivery has been continue as before so the objective of the scheme can be fulfilled. Now the twin girls and girls whose mother or father has died are also being extended benefit of Ladli Laxmi Yojana. Thanks to this scheme, birth of a girl has become a festive occasion in tribal-predominant Mandla, Betul, Chhindwara, Jhabua, Balaghat, Dindori and Seoni districts. The same is the aim is the state government. The Union government is also going to implement this scheme in the same format adopted by Madhya Pradesh government and Delhi state has already implemented it.
