Although there has been a temporary let up of rains, the flood situation in the two Medinipur districts remained grim on Friday. While overseeing the flood-hit districts, chief minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharya described the flood situation, which claimed 25 lives and affected over 22 lakh people as "unprecedented and alarming". The state government has also increased its allocation of fund from Rs 6 crores to Rs 17 crores for the affected districts of South Bengal. The chief minister on Friday visited Kolaghat along with health minister Suryakanta Mishra, home secretary Ashok Mohan Chakraborty and DGP A.B. Vohra and held a meeting with district magistrates and police superintendents of East and West Medinipur. He was also informed about the lack of coordination among the administration, the outgoing panchayat officials and the newly-elected representatives, which is affecting flood relief operations in East Medinipur. Later, Mr Bhattacharjee acknowledged that 15 persons have died in the flash floods in the West Medinipur district.
