KOLKATA, Feb 12- The state government today decided to lift from tomorrow the ban on trading and transportation of chicken and eggs imposed on 5 February, except in the 48 blocks and five municipalities where the avian flu had broken out. Poultry products would be allowed in and out of Murshidabad and Birbhum - the first to have been hit by the flu - only from authorised farms, though the ban would continue to be in force in 22 affected blocks in the two districts. But lack of coordination and the state government's knack of creating confusion worse confounded became once more evident when the minister for animal resource development, Mr Anisur Rahaman, said one thing and his department officials another. Flanked by senior officials and several poultry owners, the minister told the media that the ban would continue only in 11 blocks each in Murshidabad and Birbhum and a municipality. But, later senior departmental officials clarified that the ban won't be withdrawn in 48 blocks. Mr Rahaman said only the Centre can declare whether the state is free from the bird flu or not. The traffic of chickens and eggs from these areas is also banned. But the poultry products from state poultry farms and those having the approval of deputy directors of the ARD department in the districts can be sent to other districts. No further death of chickens nor fresh outbreak of the disease has been reported since 2 February, Mr Rahaman said. Nearly, 40 lakh birds have been culled all over the state. Out of the 11,507 samples sent for testing, only 62 have been found to be positive, Mr Rahaman said justifying the decision of withdrawing the ban.
