The West Bengal Government has put on hold its earlier decision to implement stricter emission norms for automobiles from July this year following threats of a State-wide strike issued by taxi, truck and bus operators' unions. Although the decision on stricter auto emission norms was based on the findings of the Calcutta Improvement Committee, the transport operators lobby has succeeded in pressurising the Government to set up yet another committee(and one in which they would be represented) before taking any final decision in this respect.
