Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd is likely to speed up the installation of the Thermal Power Station-II Expansion plant of Neyveli Lignite Corporation, and make a 250-MW unit ready by September.
The TPS-II Expansion unit, with two units of 250 MW each, is being erected by the Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd., main contractor for supply of steam and turbo generators.
Once fully commissioned, the total power generation of the NLC will go up from the present 2,740 MW to 3,240 MW. NLC sources told The Hindu that “circulating fluidised bed combustion (CFBC)” technology in steam generators of 250 MW-capacity was being adopted.
Hence, there were teething problems and these were being now addressed at the top level by both the NLC and the BHEL. The experience gained from the NLC’s Barsingsar project in Rajasthan had come in handy to tackle the problem encountered in Neyveli.
Sources said that in the Barsingsar project, the CFBC technology was successfully incorporated in the 125-MW units. However, the NLC project would be double the size of the Barsingsar unit.
