A move to chop off more than 800 trees-some of them planted by Sardar Patel which are over 50 years old and adorn the Vadtal-Vidyanagar state highway near Anand, has sparked off a controversy. Adding fuel to the fire is the fact that the funding of the tree felling meant to facilitate widening of the road, is being done by panchayat minister Dilip Patel, who is in charge of the district, from his development fund!
