- Bid to save fish puts West on notice

  • 26/02/1998

After nearly half a century of breakneck urban growth, the West Coast was given a bill, of sorts, by the Federal Government. Federal officials announced that wild Pacific salmon are nearly extinct and put major areas on notice that millions of people are likely to face disruptions and higher living costs if the fish are likely to face disruptions and higher living costs if the fish are to be restored as the law requires. The proposed listing of at least a dozen salmon runs from California's Central Valley to the entire Puget Sound basin as endangered or threatened is not just the most ambitious effort to save the species it also marks the first time that vast urban areas could have land and water use restricted under the Endangered Species Act.
