The universe has reached escape velocity. It did so about 15 billion years ago, give or take a few billion. Most will not feel the practical consequences for another 100 billion years or so, but for those of them who are theoretical cosmologists, the matter is rather more urgent. The news came from different quarters, in an article published in Nature and in a series of papers presented at the winter meeting of the American Astronomical Society in Washington DC.
