Bill would take aim at unsafe pet food

A bill that would ban the manufacture, sale and import of pet food containing harmful substances was approved Tuesday at a Cabinet meeting. The bill, drafted following the deaths last year of many pet dogs and cats in the United States that had been fed Chinese-made pet food, also requires makers and importers to report their business to the government. The Environment Ministry and the Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries Ministry plan to submit the bill to the current Diet session for enactment in spring 2009.
