Bio-medical waste constitutes an estimated 1.5 to 2 per cent of municipal waste in the urban areas of India. The Bio-Medical Waste Rules-1998 have been in place for the past 13 years but there are various challenges in the implementation of the system, some being lack of capacity among generators and regulators, inadequate infrastructure and finance.
This was highlighted and discussed at a day-long workshop on “Issues and Challenges in Managing Biomedical Waste in India” held earlier this week at India Habitat Centre.
It was organised by non-government organisation Toxics Link.
The workshop supported by World Health Organisation-India consisted of four sessions.
At the workshop members from various State Pollution Control Boards and hospitals deliberated on various practical problems faced while implementation of the rules. More than 60 participants from the field of policy makers, hospitals, service providers, NGOs, academic institutions and universities took part in the workshop.
