THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Central Tuber Crops Research Institute (CTCRI) at Sreekaryam, here, has developed a bio-pesticide for field pests from Cassava (Tapioca) and is in the process of developing a bio-fumigant for storage pests. A bio-pesticide production plant which will go a long way in the development of such products will be inaugurated at the CTCRI bio-pesticide laboratory on Friday. The CTCRI developed the bio-pesticide from tapioca with technical help from the Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre (VSSC) and funding from the Kerala State Council for Science, Technology and Environment (KSCSTE). Under a project funded by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), the CTCRI is developing a bio-fumigant from tapioca for keeping pests away from packed food, such as those used by Army jawans, said C A Jayaprakash, principal investigator and head, Division of Crop Protection, CTCRI.
