Bacteria could become the latest weapon in the oil industry's efforts to retrieve and purify heavy grades of crude oil. US researchers have discovered that bacterial biocatalysts can remove impurities such as sulphur, nitrogen and metals from crude oil. The technique which was invented at the US Department of Energy's Brookhaven National Laboratory, has been licensed to BioCat, a company based in Setauket, New York.
