Hyderabad: The National Biodiversity Authority has demanded a five percent cut in the sales of red sanders carried out by the state government as per the access benefit sharing clause of the Biodiversity Act. The DG of foreign trade has allowed the state to export the 8,584 tonnes of red sanders seized from smugglers worth around Rs 1,000 crore. State Biodiversity Board chairman Dr R. Hampaiah said, "As per the Act it is mandatory for the government to provide it. Most of the money will come back to the bidoversity committees of Kadapa where red sanders grow." He added efforts are on to grow red sanders by giving saplings to farmers in the area. "Kadapa is suitable to grow Red Sanders and we can raise plantations," said Hampaiah. With more seizures in recent months the quantity of Red Sanders available for sale has gone up and the state is likely to get more than Rs 1,000 crore.
