Pune, July 24 In view of the rising tree-felling, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) corporator in Pune Municipal Corporation, Anil Shirole, alleged that the civic body itself is failing to plant more trees against each tree cut during the road development work. This way, the PMC is yet to plant 9,909 trees against 3,303 trees cut on 18 different roads. A statement issued by Shirole says, "As per the law, three trees are to be planted against each tree felled. So legally, the civic body should plant 9,909 trees against 3,303 trees cut for the road development. The PMC has to keep 3x3x3 of cavities alomng the roads for the plantation of trees, which it has not done on any of these roads.' Shirole further said that even though trees need to be planted for maintaining the balance of environment, the civic body has clearly neglected this so far, he said. Meanwhile, upalokayukta Suresh Kumar held a hearing at Yashada on Tuesday following a petition filed by Rajesh Shende, president of Akhil Law College Road Parisar Rahivasi Sangh by Shende and other activists demanding the abolishment of the Tree Authority of the PMC, for the irregularities involved in the appointment of its selected members. Suresh Kumar directed the PMC officials to submit a report on these appointments within three weeks. He also directed the civic body to plant three trees against each felled and also compelled people to take care of the trees for the ensuing five years. The upalokayukta even directed the PMC to enlist those builders, who have paid the deposit with the civic body, have not bothered to collected the amount levied on them for cutting trees during a project and plant more trees against them.
