Mumbai, July 29 The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has alleged that the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation has recently granted permission for construction in forest area, thereby disregarding the Bombay High Court's verdict declaring constructions in forest land illegal. BJP leader in the BMC Bhalchandra Shirsat and corporator Manoj Kotak have now asked the civic administration to clarify whether the new permits are legal or residents staying here will once again be subjected to legal hassles. "There are around eight to ten spots in the western suburbs where completion certificates have been recently issued by the BMC to buildings on forest land. Are these permissions legal?' Shirsat asked. Both these corporators have written to the Municipal Commissioner Jairaj Phatak asking for clarifications. "There are 67,000 structures in eastern and western suburbs which have been constructed on forest land. What steps are the BMC taking after the HC declared them as illegal?' Kotak said. Phatak said that he was not aware if new building permissions are given on forest land. "As per my knowledge building permissions are given only after verifying that the proposed construction is outside forest area. I have asked for a report from the eastern suburbs regarding construction on forest land. After getting the report I will be able to disclose the findings later,' he said.
