Finding the water and power situation in city far from satisfactory even before the onset of summer, the Delhi BJP has decided to target the Sheila Dikshit Government on the issue in the Assembly during the Budget session. During a meeting with legislators this past week, Leader of Opposition in the Delhi Assembly Jagdish Mukhi decided that his party would raise this issue most vociferously during the session as it concerns every citizen. He said despite six years having passed since privatisation of the power distribution network in Delhi, the citizens were still facing unscheduled power cuts for hours on end. Also, he charged that people were being cheated through fast running meters and were being made to pay inflated bills. Claiming that the discoms were threatening consumers and fabricating false cases against them, he also charged that by showing losses through purchases made at excessively high rates they have also managed to get the power tariff increased repeatedly over the past six year. Water will also be high on the agenda of the BJP in the House. Prof. Mukhi said there was an acute shortage of drinking water as Delhi has not been getting its share of the Yamuna waters. He charged that the Congress-led Union Government had not been doing anything in this regard and the Delhi Jal Board and the Delhi Government have also not put up the case properly in appropriate fora. Also, he said, due to paucity of raw water, commissioning of the Sonia Vihar water treatment plant had also not helped Delhi's cause greatly. Incidentally, outside the House, Delhi BJP president Harsh Vardhan would be launching a public movement on these issued to corner the Government. Dr. Vardhan said the party would be organising public meetings on the issue as the unauthorised colonies and the villages were the worst hit by the power and water crisis. He also charged that Power Minister A.K. Walia had also not been able to make any impact as his warnings to the discoms have gone unheeded and he had not taken any action against them by either imposing penalty or revoking their licence. The Delhi BJP legislature party meeting also decided to highlight the alleged failure of the Delhi Government and the Union Urban Development Minister to regularise the unauthorised colonies without any terms or conditions. Also, it would raise the issue of the public transportation system being in a bad shape. "For the last nine years the Government has been promising to implement an integrated transport system in Delhi, but it has not been implemented so far,' he said. Likewise, he said, poor planning was responsible for the chaos that has been caused by the construction the Bus Rapid Transport corridor. And with the Blueline and Delhi Transport Corporation buses being involved in fatal accidents every few days, the BJP leader said there was an immediate need for a review of the entire system. The party would also raise the issue of rising prices of essential commodities, the corruption in the Public Distribution System and the liberalisation of the liquor policy. It would also press for bringing a general amnesty scheme for all buildings covered by the Master Plan for Delhi-2021 to prevent sealing and demolition in Delhi. Also on the agenda would be issued such as increase in street crime, crime against women and shortage of doctors, staff and medicines in government hospitals.
