Frequent electricity cuts have made it clear that the city needs to be prepared for frequent blackouts and for yet another dry summer this year too. According to sources, these days Delhi is facing a shortage of over 400 MW electricity daily, which will rise to over 1,000 MW electricity this summer. In the peak season, the demand rises to 4,500 MW but the supply is way below that. At present, the thermal power stations in various parts of Delhi, including Badarpur, Rajghat and Indraprastha can together meet less than half the demand. As per the promise the city is yet to raise its capacity of producing between 1,600 MW and 2,500 MW daily. Though that would not solve the problem fully, at least some relief can be sought. As per the official sources, the projects, including plants at Bamnauli, Jhajhar, Bijwasan, Bawana Dadri, Bulandshahar, will produce over 50,000 MW power daily but the materialisation of the projects is likely to take some time. Meanwhile, with the electricity shortage, the water supply will automatically get affected. Delhi is getting over 100 MGD short of the actual need of 950 MGD. According to a DJB spokesperson, Delhi produces 820 MGD in various water plants at Chandrawal, Wazirbad, Haiderpur, Bhagirathi, Okhla and Nangloi. Out of the total water supplied, only half of the supply reaches the consumers. Over 50 per cent is either wasted or reaches the unauthorised colonies illegally which are not even taken into account while making any estimate. The projects, including a dam in Himachal amd Uttarakhand, have been proposed but that is likely to take a lot of time. The Sonia Vihar plant started with much fanfare also falls short of over 30 MGD. The DJB spokesperson also said that a summer plan has been made which will be made public soon.
