BMC plans multi-level, underground parking near Metro stations

Giving planning for the much-delayed Metro Rail in the city a further boost, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has jumped into the fray, deciding to integrate its plans for underground and multi-level parking lots with the Metro Rail project. These parking lots will now be a stone's throw away from various stations along the proposed Metro Rail routes. Consultants Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) have been asked to carry out a survey of the possible number of people boarding and alighting at each of the stations so as to arrive at an estimate of the requirement for the car parking lots. In New Delhi, the DMRC is responsible for executing the Metro Rail project as well as for creating surface parking space ranging from 1,000 sq metres to 6,000 sq metres in each of the 18 stations in Line I of the Delhi Metro. Additional Municipal Commissioner Manu Kumar Srivastava said that the BMC and the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA), which is executing Mumbai's Metro Rail project, have already had joint meetings to decide on the locations of the proposed underground parking lots. The BMC had earlier shortlisted 21 locations for underground car parks and one multi-level car park at Zaveri Bazaar. Tenders have been floated for two of these
