CONGRESS Corporator Rajendra Prasad Choube on Tuesday pointed out that the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is discriminating the water supply in different pattern parts of the city. He made these claims in his speech on the civic body's Budget 2008-09 in the Corporation's general body meeting on Tuesday. To make his point, he pointed out to certain statistics. The civic 'A' ward that outlines the up-market south Mumbai area of Nariman Point, Churchgate and Fort receives a supply of 71.89 million litres of water per day (mld) when the population of the area is only around two lakh. In sharp contrast, the 'B' ward area that consists of Bhendi Bazaar and Dongri areas receives only 9.77 mld for a population of 1,40,000. Similarly, 'C' ward receives 7.15 mld water for a population of 1,90,000. The 'C' ward includes areas like Dhobi Talao, Nul Bazaar, Chira Bazaar and Chandanwadi. Choube further pointed out that the situation becomes worse as one moves away from the island city towards the north Mumbai. Citing the example of his own civic ward 'R-North' in Dahisar, he said that in contrast to south Mumbai, his constituency hardly receives water for about one and a half hours per day. The population in his constituency is around 48,000. He specifically mentioned three areas in his ward - Ketakipada, Dharkhadi and Samata Nagar. Ketakipada gets water from 6-7pm, Samata Nagar from 11-12pm and Dharkhadi from 9.30-11pm daily.
