Municipal commissioner Jairaj Phatak shot down Shiv Sena executive chief Uddhav Thackeray's appeal to cut the water connection in highrises and construction sites in the city.
In view of the water cut in the city, Thackeray had recently appealed to the state government asking them to cut the water connection in highrises as well as the construction sites. This came in response to minister Ajit Pawar's demand that the water supply for agricultural purposes should be stopped.
On Wednesday, Sena leader Ravindra Waikar presented Thackeray's appeal in the standing committee meeting. However, Phatak refused this demand saying, "This is not
a feasible idea. If BMC decides to cut the water connection of highrises and construction sites, then the civic body loses Rs2 crore as revenue. Also, the construction sites are generating work in the city. The idea presented to us doesn't make sense and it is not practical.'
The civic body has given around 2,400 temporary connections to construction sites in Mumbai and earns Rs2 crore as revenue per year. Also, officials claimed that there is no paucity of water in the city as the lakes are nearly 60 per cent full. Apart from that, BMC is hoping that the water levels will rise in the next two months.
