Breached dyke yet to be repaired

As the monsoon season has come nearer the Lakhimpur district Water Resource Department has yet to repair the embankments, which were breached by the flood in the year 2007. It is alleged that the said department has failed to take proper initiative to complete the repairing works. It is reported that all total 28 per cent of different embankments of river like Ranga, Singra, Drupang and Kakai were breached by the last year flood. Admitting that the repairing works of the embankments are incomplete an official source disclosed that the repairing works are in progress. Due to the lack of fund the proposed repairing-cum-construction work has not been completed till date. According to the source, the proposed schemes are Lilabari to Kadam portion of Kakai dyke (100 lakh), Ampara to Amtola and Ranganadi dyke (430 lakh), Phulbari to Barsala at Singra dyke (299 lakh) and Rajgarh to Pichala of Druhang dyke (25 lakh). The said schemes are functioning under FDR head. On other hand, it is alleged that due to negligence of the officials another seven erosion affected embankments has been left behind without taking any protective measures. Heavy erosion by Subansiri river at Tikirai has posed a great threat to the villagers. The another erosion affected embankments, which are neglected by the Water Resource Department are Bihpuria town Protection bundh at Ahomgaon, Luhitmuk dyke in Jamuguri, Ghora Bandha dyke, Bihdia- Chamdubi dyke at Baginadi, Teteliguri dyke at Dangibil in the district, sources added.
