Breakwater urgently needed to halt erosion of beaches in Hulhudhoo, Meedhoo

A solution for the problem of beach erosion in both Meedhoo and Hulhudhoo islands in Addu atoll was to have breakwaters built around the affected areas as soon as possible, the Island Offices in both islands have said. Reporters who visited the island on Tuesday to see the erosion were shocked at the extent at which beach erosion had affected some regions of the beach. It was also apparent that Meedhoo was the more severe case of erosion. Three areas had been marked off in Meedhoo for the construction of breakwaters and the house-reef of the areas had cracked and broken off in many places. The breakwater project is scheduled to commence in three phases and the most damage was evident in the area which had been designated as the first phase. Many trees near the beach had fallen over after the soil they were growing on became too loose and weak to support it due to the erosion. The total area designated for the breakwater project is around 1.5km in length. The Island Office said that during the first phase a 325m breakwater would be built in the area known as
