Brickfields depleting forest resources

The depletion of forest resources is of continuous concern as despite warnings, destruction continues unabated in Bangladesh. As such, the news that firewood is still in use in brick fields is very alarming. By defying the ban on the use of wood many brickfield owners are showing a complete disregard - not only for the letter of the law but also for the environment. The ban placed on the use of wood for brick-making was for the purpose of protecting forests but if such disregard is allowed to continue, the forests will be quickly denuded - which is exactly what is happening in Sirajganj where 60 brickfields, set up in the district during the current season, are planning to consume about 11,000 tonnes of firewood.
