A cosmic explosion just across the Milky Way from Earth gave off as much energy in one-tenth of a second as the sun does in 100,000 years, astronomers reported. The explosion was also the brightest flash of light ever detected from beyond the solar system, they added. The blast was observed on December 27, a day after the killer tsunami struck.
