Britain is turning into an old refrigerator dump because it lacks facilities to recycle them in line with new European rules, industry experts said. Since November alone, the old cooling appliances could form a line of metal stretching from London to Brussels. A 1998 European Union directive came into force in January 2002 ordering the removal of ozone-depleting substances in old fridges before scrapping, in order to cut harmful gas emissions.
