Broken stars provide clue to Milky Way origin

Debris from a dwarf galaxy that was destroyed in a collision with the Milky Way about 10 million years ago, is providing scientists with new evidence about the formation of the Earth's home galaxy. A team of international astronomers used data from the European Space Agency's Hipparcos satellite to locate the ancient objects which could be early pieces of the Milky Way.
