Ahmedabad: Early birds among BT cotton farmers in Surendranagar and Bhavnagar districts have been bit by the millibug. Those farmers who had sown BT cotton just 20 to 25 days ago in their farms are the worst affected in Surendranagar and Bhavnagar districts. There are several cases where farmers have lost all their BT cotton crops. "I had sown the crop just 24 days ago. But today, I lost hope that it could survive after millibug attack on my farm. Now, I have to sow again,'' says a farmer, Sankar Golani of Sayla in Surendrangar district. According to Golani, his BT cotton crops spread over 500 acres in Sayla village are bughit. He and other farmers feel helpless as pesticides have failed to control this bug. "We have tried many pesticides but all in vain,'' says another farmer Valji Patel. "Farmers have become cautious after this. Many farmers in our village think that this time they would grow other crops instead,'' he adds. According to sources, Surendranagar and Bhavnagar are the two districts where cotton growing farmers were hit by this bug. The question is, why only Bhavanagar and Surendranagar districts are hit. "Because, in these two districts, farmers do not go for alternate crops. It has become easy for millibugs to travel from one farm to another as there are large number of cotton fields. There is no other crop in between, which is how it spreads,'' explains Savaliya.
