TRICHY: The Supreme Court order banning Jallikattu, disappointed bull owners, tamers and supporters of the sport who went on a protest on Thursday, erecting black flags in front of their houses at Periyasuriyur here, where the event takes place every year during the season.
The villagers also staged protest at Periyasuriyur and brought their bulls to the protest venue. Arumugham D, one of the organizers of the Periyasuriyur Jallikattu, said, "We shell out at least Rs 5,000 per month for the food and proper care of the bulls. However, people never understand the realty."
With a tinge of sadness, one of the protesters said now that the jallikattu has been banned, bulls can only be sent for meat to Kerala.
The SC verdict has come as a big jolt to the bull owners. State president of the Tamizhar Jallikattu Kalai Valarpor Nala Peravai N Muthusamy said several villages along these regions breed varieties of cattle to be used for jallikattu. "Not a single owner was harmed by the bulls till now," he added.
"However, the animal welfare organisations are to be blamed for the banning. They have taken note of one or two incidents and failed to look at the real picture," he added. The association for several years has been fighting at all levels for bringing back the lost glory of the sport.
The Tamil Nadu Veera Vilayattu Jallikattu Padukappu Nala Sangam state secretary S Ondiraju said his organization has decided to seek the Tamil Nadu government's help to file a review petition in the court.
"Every year, we have to knock the doors of the Supreme Court to conduct the sport and after complying with various restrictions imposed by the court. However, the animal welfare associations have been finding faults in the conduct of the sport and had brought disgrace to the tradition and culture," said JK Ritheesh, the president of the association.
