Bus washed away in J&K flood waters, 50 dead

At least 50 people belonging to a marriage party were feared killed after the bus in which they were travelling was washed away by flood waters in Nowshera sector near Line of Control on Thursday. Jammu and Kashmir has been put under high alert following the worst floods to hit the state in 22 years. Incessant rains over the last three days has left vast areas flooded and over 20 dead in other related incidents. “At least 50 people are feared dead after their bus skidded off the road at Laam area,” the Divisional Commissioner (Div Com) of Jammu, Shantmanu said. No bodies have however been recovered even though rescue operations are going on. “There were about 60 people in the 52-seater bus,” a senior police official told The Hindu . According to Irrigation and Flood officials, the water level in the Jhelum, which traverses across Kashmir, is more than 7 ft above danger mark, at Sangam in south Kashmir. It was well above the danger mark in Srinagar as well. “This is the worst flood we have seen since 1992. Since the rain is continuing, we expect floods in more areas. We have asked all those residing in low lying areas to move to safer places,” Chief Engineer of Irrigation and Flood Control Kashmir, Javed Jaffer told The Hindu . With many neighboourhoods submerged, Srinagar was a city under water on Thursday and residents could be seen using boats to move to safer places. All educational institutions will remain closed till September 7 and Haj flights scheduled for September 5, 6 and 7 have been cancelled. The state Government has announced a relief package of Rs 10 crore for the flood-affected areas. Meanwhile, according to PTI, the 300-km-long Jammu-Srinagar National Highway was closed for traffic on Thursday due to landslides at various places. In New Delhi, Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh reviewed the flood situation in the state and assured Chief Minister Omar Abdullah of all necessary help for relief operations even as inclement weather forced him to cancel his visit to border areas of the state.
