Japan is pioneering electric bicycles, with motors that can be activated when the pedalling gets tough. These are the devices the city of Kawagoe wants its staff to use to cut down on gasoline use. It has 20 electric-motor-assisted bicycles to use to visit locations within 3km. Bicycles are a common form of transportation in Japan, but for limited purposes. Government and business now are trying to broaden the uses.
