The Municipal Corporation is planning to introduce a token system in parking lots soon. It is likely to be implemented by April. The parking lots to be covered under this scheme include the ones at Sukhna Lake, Fun Republic, and parking lots in Sector 34, Sector 9 and Sector 17. The facility for providing parking passes on a yearly basis will also be introduced. Recommendations to streamline the condition of parking lots was taken during a meeting of the paid parking committee held today. The meeting, chaired by Mayor Pardeep Chhabra, was attended by MC councillors Palav Mukherjee and Surinder Kumar Jagota, Joint Commissioner-II H S Khandola and SDE, Headquarter, Arjeet Singh. The committee has decided that the demarcation of parking lots will be done with reflective paint which is visible at night. In case a contractor does not provide parking tokens, there is a penalty of Rs 500 for the first time which will be increased to Rs 2,000 for the fourth time. In the six parking lots which do not have a contractor at present, the token system will be started by the first week of April. For the rest, fresh auctions will be held around July. While some contractors had surrendered the contract for managing parking lots, some had been disqualified after irregularities were discovered in their functioning. There are plans to install CCTV cameras at the entrance of each parking lot. After every 50 metre, one person will be deployed to manage parking. The timings of parking lots will be from 8 am to midnight. There will be parking passes valid from a month to a year. For two-wheelers, the cost of a pass for a month is Rs 150 and four-wheelers is Rs 300. For a year, the amounts are Rs 1,200 and Rs 2,800 respectively. The Mayor said penalties will be imposed for overcharging, not wearing uniform, misbehaviour, misuse and unauthorised parking.
