KOLKATA, 4 JUNE: The state Cabinet will approve a proposal to pay Rs 1000 per month to the unwilling farmers and agricultural labourers of Singur at a meeting tomorrow. The state commerce and industry department has moved the proposal to the Cabinet for clearance to pay a monthly sum to the poor farmers and farm labourers as announced by the chief minister a fortnight ago at a function to mark the completion of one year in office.
Since the process of returning the 400 acres to unwilling farmers could not be initiated after Tata Motors decided to move court against the Singur Land Rehabilitation and Development Bill the state government decided to give a monthly sum of Rs 1,000 every month to the poor among the farmers who have not so far collected the cheques of compensation.
However, the proposal does not include distributing rice at Rs 2 per kg which was also part of the chief minister's announcement. The chief minister had expressed her regret on being unable to return the plots to the unwilling farmers of Singur at a function to mark the first anniversary of the new government. A number of Bills would also be approved including the West Bengal Backward Classes (Other than Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribes) (Reservation of Vacancies in Services and Posts), Bill, 2012 will also come up for approval. sns
