The U.S. Forest Service approved a plan aimed at reducing the threat of wildfire that could more than double logging on 2.4 million acres in three national forests in Northern California. An act passed in 1998 directed the forest service to come up with a plan to create a series of fuel breaks, long strips of logged land that help prevent the spread of forest fires.
