Eluru, Aug. 27: West Godavari collector G. Jayalakshmi called for efforts to realise total sanitation in the district by 2010. The collector held a review meet on sanitation with the officials here on Wednesday.
Speaking on the occasion, Ms Jayalakshmi said that individual sanitary latrines were sanctioned to 2.29 lakh families living below poverty line in the district and added that nearly 1.91 lakh ISLs were constructed so far. Out of 2,514 schools, toilets were constructed at 2,481 schools.
For 266 anganwadi centres where toilets were sanctioned, so far only 156 toilets were constructed. She directed the officials to observe every Wednesday in a week as sanitation day and asked the village sanitation committees to inspect the anganwadi centres and schools for proper maintenance of sanitation.
Ms Jayalakshmi said that for maintenance of toilets in schools, schools funds should be utilised and asked the school heads to take responsibility for provision of basic amenities like potable water and toilets at the schools. The collector directed the rural water supply authorities to initiate measures to ensure supply of potable water in the villages and asked for distribution of kits meant for testing water samples to the villages.
