Call to increase public transport

Speakers at a discussion meeting suggested providing fuel subsidy for transport sector and increasing the number of public transport to ease suffering of the commuters. They also suggested giving priority to bus service in the transport planning because people from middle and lower income group use buses for their communications. The meeting was organised by Save the Environment Movement in the city on Thursday. Maruf Rahman of WBB Trust presented the keynote paper at the discussion presided over by Prof KM Moniruzzaman of Urban and Regional Planning Department. Speakers at the meeting called for introducing strategic planning and monitoring in transport sector. They stressed the need for controlling bus fare, establishing more infrastructure including passenger shed, ticket counter and proper system to get in the bus. They also called for withdrawing import tax from bus and its spare parts. Chairman of Trans Silva Group Syed Rejaul Karim, senior lawyer of Bela Syed Iqbal Kabir, journalist Latifur Bari Hamim, General Secretary of the Citizen's Rights Movement Tushar Rehman, General Secretary of Peace Ifma Hossain and Chairman of Save the Environment Movement Abu Naser Khan were present at the discussion meeting.
